But how does a coach do this?
Coaching is delivered during regular, weekly sessions by telephone or in person whichever is more convenient. Clients bring an agenda of items to the call or meeting and the coach helps them address those problems by helping them solve those problems and make the most of their opportunities. When they are taking on a large goal, we help them design the project and provide the support and structure needed to make sure it gets done. We bring out each client’s best by offering advice, expecting a lot, helping them strategize and celebrating their wins. A practice can be national, with clients in every area of the country, from big cities to small towns; clients can range from small business owners to CEOs; and coaching can focus on either business goals or personal goals.
What should I look for in a coach?
The right coach brings out your best, consistently. To do this, the coach you select should pass the following three tests:
(1) Does this coach have a track record of helping someone like me accomplish the goals I want?
(2) Do I feel good and motivated to act when with this coach?
(3) Will this coach keep up with me—and stay ahead of me—as I grow? That’s it.
You can always check references and try out the coach for a month to see if he or she is really the right one for you.
I work well with three types of clients:
(1) Executives and office professionals who are smart, quick, and ready to do what it takes to reach blockbuster goals.
(2) Individuals who are making substantial changes in their personal and professional lives.
(3) Individuals who are working on an important project.
Does life coaching work?
While some people may be a little sceptical about turning to a coach to help them with their life issues, the fact is that people are turning to life coaches in increasing numbers — which is a sure sign that they must be serving some useful purpose.
The success or failure of the coaching often depends on people finding the right life coach for them — whether it’s someone to help kick-start a new career path or someone to help with more personal issues.
A coach can assist people to organize their priorities and decide which directions they want to go in. From their sessions, a person will agree to strategies with their coach to help themselves solve problems — and in this way they will become much clearer about what they want out of life. A life coach will effectively act as a sounding board for ideas — rather like a brainstorming partner.
However, life coaching is not a miracle cure for people’s problems — particularly if a person isn’t open to the possibility of closing the gap between where they are and where they want to be. Anyone visiting a coach needs to be open to new ideas and ways of doing things and needs to commit to the process. Life coaching is also not a solution to people with more deep-rooted problems such as depression, as these require more specialist help and therapy.
How would I get started?
If you feel that this type of relationship could work for you, you can write to me and we can take this ahead. Coaching is not something we sell; it is something you buy because you want it.
Where do I start with a coach?
Most coaches begin with a special client meeting to get to know each other. The coach wants to
hear about the client’s goals, needs, and challenges. The client wants to get comfortable with the
coach and during this meeting, both parties design a list of goals and a game plan to achieve these goals.
Prior to this meeting, the client will have received a welcome kit containing checklists and
assessment materials to make the most of the meeting. If required a coach may spend extra time (gratis)
with new clients only to know them better and coaching them to set the best goals for themselves.Together they design the best way to work together as a team to accomplish the goals.
